κατὰ τὴν ὁδόν

The title of this blog post and our blog subtitle, κατὰ τὴν ὁδόν, is pronounced: “kawtaw tayn hawdawn.”  For those linguist friends of mine, I’m sorry for this representation, I’m just writing this in a way that non-linguists can read, and for those friends of mine that know Greek, I’m sorry if I use a different pronunciation system than you do.  This phrase means “according to the way.”  This phrase occurs in Acts 24:14 and it describes Paul’s life: “According to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our fathers, believing everything laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets, having a hope in God, which these men themselves accept, that there will be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust.”  This “Way” is the Christian mode of life, it is what characterizes Christians as Christians.  If you are living κατὰ τὴν ὁδόν, you are living in a consistently Christian manner.

Now this Christian manner, this living according to the Way, is a passion that Sydnie and I (Andrew) both have.  We desire to worship God, we believe everything laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets and we have a hope that there will be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust.  It is from our “According to the Way” attitude that we desire to do Bible Translation and mission work in the future, and more importantly, it is from this attitude that we live today.  What I mean by that is that while Syd and I truly plan on living κατὰ τὴν ὁδόν in the future on the mission field, more importantly, we are living κατὰ τὴν ὁδόν right now!

That’s actually why I made this blog.  Inasmuch as I know Syd and I will need prayer in the future, I know that we actually need prayer now!  An attitude that says “I don’t need prayer until I get on the field” is simply wrong.  That sort of attitude seems very dangerous and reckless.  As stewards of God’s Gospel, as those who live κατὰ τὴν ὁδόν (according to the way), how can we ignore prayer and our desperate need of it?

So we’d love it if you would partner with us and pray for us as we continue on in our studies and our preparation for marriage and our preparation for the mission field.

Specific Prayer Needs

  • Our Relationship
    • Pray that God would comfort us as we are in different states for our educations right now.  It’s difficult to be so far apart, especially in light of how close we’ve grown in the last year and a half.  Pray that we would love each other well, and that when we are together, we would honor God.  Pray that we would encourage one another and be strengthened in the Way by one another.  Pray that marriage planning would go smoothly and that our planning would be effective and exciting.
  • Our Finances
    • Pray that God would continue to provide for us.  We’re both at school full time, so our expenses are pretty high.  However, both of us are working part time jobs right now, and we’ve been blessed to receive some great scholarships and gifts, so while finances are an issue, they’re not an extremely uncomfortable issue for us at this time.  Pray that we would make wise decisions with our money and that we would not take gifts and scholarships for granted, but would be deeply appreciative and grateful for the ways that God blesses us.
  • Our Educations
    • Pray that God would give us strength to endure in our studies and a focus that comes from him.
      • Sydnie is finishing her senior year and with the marriage coming up, pray that she would continue to work hard in her studies while we plan for the wedding.
      • Andrew is in his first year of Graduate school at a different school and the expectations and cultures are different.  Pray that he would realize the differences and that he could adapt well to the new environment and continue to work hard.

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit and read our blog. We are truly excited at the work that God is doing in our lives and our respective mission fields currently, and anticipate the work He will continue to do wherever He leads us next.

Thank you in advance for your prayers and support as we seek to glorify the Lord and live κατὰ τὴν ὁδόν.
